For decades, the Sri Lankan national school curriculum was primarily offered in Sinhala and Tamil. However, recognising the growing demand for global communication skills and higher education opportunities, the Ministry of Education introduced the English medium stream for local syllabi.
In simple terms, the English medium local syllabus follows the exact same curriculum, textbooks, and national examinations (such as the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and G.C.E. Advanced Level) set by the National Institute of Education (NIE) and the Department of Examinations in Sri Lanka. The only difference is the language of instruction and examination is English.
While subjects like Sinhala, Tamil and English/ Tamil Literature are taught in their respective native languages, core subjects such as Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, and Health are taught entirely in English using translated government textbooks.
